Monumental Pair of Early 19th Century Brazilian Colonial Architectural Finials A striking and rare pair of monumental architectural finials, carved in solid tropical hardwood, likely peroba or jacarandá-de-bahia, dating from the early 1800s and originating from a grand rural estate in Brazil. These sculptural elements embody the robust grace of Luso-Brazilian colonial design, with voluminous organic contours tapering into elegant, temple-like pedestals over squared plinths. Their scale, patina, and deeply aged surface cracks attest to over two centuries of dignified exposure, possibly having crowned the gateposts or balustrades of a fazenda house from the coffee or sugarcane cycle. Each finial is hand-carved from a single block of wood, displaying subtle asymmetries that speak to the artisanal methods of the period.
