Crescent of Smoke: A Majestic Ottoman Censer in Brass and Wood, Circa 1900” A vision of golden grandeur, this rare and evocative censer is a poetic relic of the East — an objet d’art that once perfumed the air of a refined chamber, a ceremonial hall, or a sanctuary of devotion. Likely crafted in the early 20th century under the lingering influence of Ottoman design, it is a composition of remarkable symmetry and symbolic resonance. The domed lid, elegantly fluted and surmounted by a crescent moon finial, rises like a minaret above the pierced body, allowing tendrils of incense smoke to spiral gently through the air. Beneath, an octagonal chamber is adorned with repoussé handles and rests delicately upon scrolled legs — each curve and contour echoing the refinement of Islamic architectural motifs. All of this is anchored on a scalloped brass platform mounted over a robust wooden base, forming a unified structure measuring approximately 65 cm in height and 64 cm in width. The gleam of hand-hammered brass, mellowed by time, imbues the piece with both nobility and soul. Though utilitarian in origin, this censer transcends function. It speaks of rituals long past, of prayers scented with amber and oud, of private moments lit by lantern glow. Whether as a centerpiece in a collector’s gallery or a singular accent in an opulent interior, it is an object that demands contemplation — a crescent-shaped whisper from another world, still glowing with memory.

Monumental Pair of Early 19th Century Brazilian Colonial Architectural Finials A striking and rare pair of monumental architectural finials, carved in solid tropical hardwood, likely peroba or jacarandá-de-bahia, dating from the early 1800s and originating from a grand rural estate in Brazil. These sculptural elements embody the robust grace of Luso-Brazilian colonial design, with voluminous organic contours tapering into elegant, temple-like pedestals over squared plinths. Their scale, patina, and deeply aged surface cracks attest to over two centuries of dignified exposure, possibly having crowned the gateposts or balustrades of a fazenda house from the coffee or sugarcane cycle. Each finial is hand-carved from a single block of wood, displaying subtle asymmetries that speak to the artisanal methods of the period. Their form is reminiscent of stylized flame or inverted bellflowers—motifs often found in baroque and rococo ecclesiastical carvings of the era, here secularized and adapted for vernacular architecture. The aged surface bears all the beauty of time: weathering, shrinkage cracks, and oxidation, creating a rich, honest texture impossible to replicate. Ideal as sculptural objects, pedestal displays, or to be recontextualized in contemporary design, they are both architectural relics and timeless decorative statements. Whether installed indoors or in a sheltered garden, these finials carry a sense of rootedness and grandeur. Pieces of this size, age, and provenance rarely appear on the market. Dimensions: 66 cm high x 24 cm x 24cm.
